Why ratings changed

In 2019, the U.S. Department of Energy updated the test for dehumidifiers. Portable units are now rated at 65°F (not the old 80°F), and efficiency moved to Integrated Energy Factor (IEF). That’s why a “50‑pint” today isn’t the same as yesterday’s “50‑pint.” Cooler air holds less moisture — so capacities look smaller under the new, more realistic test.

How to choose a capacity that actually works

Two homes with the same square footage can need different dehumidifier capacities. Envelope tightness, infiltration, and where moisture enters the space all matter. Use square footage as your first filter, then choose the moisture condition that best describes reality. “Slightly–moderately damp” covers spaces that feel clammy in shoulder seasons, while “very damp” describes persistent high humidity with occasional condensation. “Wet” applies when you see regular pooling or dripping on surfaces. If you’re between bands or your basement stays under ~68°F, move up one class.

Portable vs whole‑home

Under roughly 2,000 sq ft on one level, a modern portable dehumidifier in the 22/35/50‑pint classes typically handles room-by-room or small apartment needs. For entire homes or for conditioning connected below‑grade spaces, ducted “whole‑home” units are a better fit. Those are matched to latent load at the design condition (e.g., 73°F / 60% RH) and can be tied into existing ductwork with outside air for ventilation.

Drainage and placement

Any dehumidifier works best with a continuous drain or lift pump so the bucket never limits runtime. Place units where humid air circulates freely — not tucked behind furniture. In basements, keep doors to other damp spaces open when practical so the unit can see the whole load.

What changed in 2019/2020

The move to a cooler test temperature made published capacities look smaller, but it didn’t make the machines weaker.
